So, Nate and I changed the homepage from (picture 1) to (picture 2) & (picture 3). I pushed up a live version of it and hosted it from my computer, and had Dan make comments on what he liked and didn't like and made changes to the thing real-time for him to observe. This took a few hours. Finally he said he loved it. All that is needed is a footer- but this is the first time he said he'd pay us for how the website looks, so this is very satisfying (see "dan comments")
Something I did learn about UX and layouts are that things cannot be overly large. He commented on this and I decided to look up ratio and sizing techniques for websites and found this resource about image sizing in wordpress and also check out a general resource about screaming frog and how it can help you organize and optimize your images.
I actually got hung up on this screaming frog business and wanted to do some analysis on the site. I used screaming frog to do a crawl of all the images on the site and saw some interesting tidbits, like the logo is linked 200-something times because it shows up on every page and the most frequently occurring image is the "loading widget" which shows up 500 times and looks like a spinning pinwheel. I was able to see which images had alt text and which did not (picture 4).
Also found some duplicate images using the crawl.
